Call to Order/Roll Call

The meeting was called to order by Commissioner Larry Lee at 1:40p.m. A quorum was present.

Staff Report

Kabir Hypolite announced that Mayor Willie Brown made new Commissioner appointments. Commissioner Malcolm Heinicke is now Commission Chair and Commissioner Alicia Becerril is Vice-Chair. Commissioner is Malcolm Heinicke resigned from the Employment Committee and Former Commission Chair Ghada Saliba-Malouf resigned from the Commission.

New Business

1) Kabir Hypolite reviewed the newly adopted Human Rights Commission 2002 Committee Guidelines regarding attendance for Advisory Committees members that was recently adopted by the full Commission for all standing Committees.

2) Members discussed the Commission's adoption of a Board of Supervisors' Resolution opposing the U.S. Patriot Act to the extent that it is not illegal to do so. Members also discussed the Act and its impact on racial minorities in the United States. The Committee directed staff to inquire whether the Human Rights Commission's Issues Committee has had an opportunity to discuss the U.S. Patriot Act and whether any employment related issues have been identified during their discussions.

3) Mary Gin Starkweather and Kabir Hypolite distributed the Human Rights Commission's press release announcing recruitment efforts for newly appointed Advisory Committee Members.

Announcements

Mary Gin Starkweather announced a reading at City Lights Bookstore of the newly published book It's a Free Country - Personal Freedom in America After September 11 which includes a discussion of the Human Rights Commission's hearing on anti-Arab, anti-Muslim violence and discrimination following the tragic events of September eleven.
